Sacred Places: Ephesus

The Riot and the Remnant

“Soon the whole city was in an uproar; they dragged Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions, into the theater, and the assembly was in confusion: some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.”

— Acts 19:29, 32 (NIV)

Background

Paul’s ministry in Ephesus didn’t stay quiet for long. As people turned from idols to Christ, sales of silver shrines to Artemis plummeted. Demetrius, a silversmith who profited off the goddess, stirred up a mob.

The center of the chaos?

The Great Theater of Ephesus—a massive, stone structure that seated over 20,000 people.

The crowd filled with rage. People screamed. Many didn’t even know why they were rioting—only that the gospel was disrupting everything they thought they believed.

This wasn’t just economic panic. It was a spiritual backlash. The Kingdom of God had come near—and the enemy pushed back.

Devotional

You’ll know you’re shaking hell when chaos rises for no clear reason.

Ephesus teaches us that the gospel is disruptive. It doesn’t just bring peace—it brings confrontation.

Not because Christ is cruel, but because the darkness is defensive.

Sometimes you’ll find yourself in the middle of a mess you didn’t create.

You were just being faithful… and suddenly, people are stirred up, systems are threatened, and confusion breaks loose.

But don’t fear the uproar.

Even in the riot, God had His remnant. Paul wasn’t alone.

And you’re not either.

Prayer

Lord,

When confusion surrounds me and the enemy stirs chaos,

Let me remember that You are not the author of disorder.

Give me courage to stand firm in the storm—knowing You are still speaking, even when the crowd is shouting.

Amen.

Reflective Question

Have you ever found yourself caught in spiritual backlash or confusion while standing for truth?

Ask the Lord to show you how He was working, even in the uproar.
