Where the Spirit Confronts the Stronghold
“God was performing extraordinary miracles by Paul’s hands, so that even face cloths or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.”
— Acts 19:11–12 (CSB)
Background
By the time Paul returned to Ephesus on his third missionary journey, the seeds he had planted were already taking root. This time, he stayed for over two years, teaching, discipling, and contending for the souls in a city consumed with magic, idolatry, and spiritual darkness.
Ephesus was home to the massive Temple of Artemis, a center for fertility worship, sorcery, and profit. People traveled from all over the empire to offer to the goddess, purchase magic scrolls, and pay homage to the powers they thought ruled the heavens.
So when Paul began preaching Jesus as the only true power, it didn’t just stir hearts—it shook the entire foundation of the city.
People were healed. Evil spirits were cast out.
And the gospel didn’t just reach ears—it confronted strongholds.
Devotional
Some places require a gentler word. Others call for a spiritual showdown.
Ephesus was a spiritual battleground.
It was wealthy, worldly, and deeply entrenched in demonic worship. And still—God showed up.
Not quietly this time.
This was fire-on-the-ground, darkness-fleeing, name-of-Jesus-wins kind of power.
But even in the miraculous, the battle was real.
Ephesus reminds us that the gospel isn’t always politely received.
It threatens idols. It exposes darkness. It rattles the systems that keep people in bondage.
And still… that’s exactly where Jesus sends us.
Don’t be surprised if your obedience draws resistance.
That may be the sign you’re standing on sacred ground.
Prayer
Jesus,
You are greater than every stronghold.
When You call me into hard places, help me walk in the power of Your name—not in fear.
Break through the spiritual walls I face and let Your light shine through me.
Amen.
Reflective Question
Where have you encountered spiritual resistance in your faith journey?
Ask the Lord if there are idols or strongholds He’s calling you to stand against—not in your strength, but in His.
