The Fields of Boaz
“So Ruth left and entered the field to gather grain behind the harvesters. She happened to be in the portion of land belonging to Boaz…”
— Ruth 2:3 (CSB)
Background
Long before Bethlehem became known for a manger and a star, it was known for its fields. Fertile, sloping hills outside the village supported barley and wheat—grains that sustained Israel during both famine and harvest.
It was here, in the barley fields just outside the gates, that a Moabite widow named Ruth went to glean—bending low among the stalks, quietly gathering what the harvesters left behind. According to the Law, the poor and foreigner were permitted to glean from the corners of a field (Leviticus 23:22), and Ruth, a woman from a cursed nation, took that risk.
What she didn’t know was that God was leading her step by step into His plan. The field she “happened” to enter belonged to Boaz—one of her late husband’s relatives and a man of integrity. From this meeting would come a marriage, a redemption, and a lineage that would one day lead to Jesus.
Devotional
The fields of Boaz are more than farmland. They are a picture of God’s grace.
Ruth came in need. She came humbly. She came as an outsider.
And yet, in the fields of Boaz, she was seen, protected, and blessed.
God didn’t require her to fix her past or prove her worth. He simply asked her to show up in faith.
And when she did, He made sure she was in exactly the right field at the exact right time.
How many times have you felt like you were picking up scraps behind someone else’s harvest?
How often have you questioned whether your steps were even seen?
The story of Ruth reminds us that nothing is accidental with God.
Even the fields He leads us into—even when we feel unseen, unworthy, or overlooked—are often the very places where redemption begins.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for guiding me to the fields You have prepared.
Even when I don’t understand the path or feel like I’m barely gathering leftovers, remind me that You see me—and that You are weaving something redemptive through my story.
Let my heart stay humble, my hands stay open, and my eyes stay fixed on You.
Amen.
Reflective Question
Have you ever looked back and realized that what felt like “just another field” was actually a turning point?
Ask the Lord to help you trust the steps He’s leading you through today—even if they feel ordinary.
